REVIEWS (Dossiers and special numbers)

FRAZA, n° 4, 2012.
University of Rzeszow (Poland)
A dossier of 30 pages on Kenneth White, containing a selection of poems, an essay on geopoetics by Kenneth White, and an essay on his work.

Summary of the essay
Towards a finer earth-living – Kenneth White’s Geopoetics by Anna Kronenberg
The main objective of this article is to present Kenneth White and to analyze his selected works. Kenneth White is a thinker, poet and writer, not well-known in Poland. The theoretical works of Kenneth White provide the context for this analysis, especially those which are devoted to Geopoetics. White creates in his
prose and poetry the Wanderer-Visionary figure, whose main goal is to experience the World and to be in a relationship with the place. The main paradigm of his literary creation is mutual interrelation between the human being and the environment. The concept of Geopoetics provides a useful framework for analysis of literary work, which is exemplified using the example of the journals of Mariusz Wilk. Wilk indicated many times the big influence of Kenneth White’s ideas and the article investigates how Mariusz Wilk is using White’s theories in practice.

1) Geopoetics, Geocriticism, Geoculturology, a Comparative Analysis of Concepts by Elzbieta Rybicka
This paper aims at a comparative study of a few contemporary approaches to the relation between geography and literature. The first among these is geopoetics, by K. White, which is a project based on anthropology and philosophy. The second is geocriticism, by B. Westphal, which is a comparative literary geography. The third approach is geo-culturology, by W. Szczukin, linked to the Russian semiotics of culture.

2) On Poetic Inhabiting of the World According to Kenneth White by Elzbieta Kononczuk
The article constitutes an interpretation of a collection of essays by K. White, La carte de Guido, un pèlerinage européen (2011), which serves the author to present the method of geopoetics as proposed by White. The essays in question are also proof of his thesis which puts forth that writing is an “intellectual and existential geography”.
